Ok, now parents are going to jail for their children truanting off school, do people think this is fair?
I am not a parent myself, but in many cases it is not the parents fault and when the children get to a certain age there is a limited amount you can do.
If they are punishing parents should they punish teachers do?
I think they should punish the children, not the parents as it is often not there fault and they cannot do much about it.

I'm an elementary school teacher (first grade and now kindergarten). When you have small children with many absences or tardies, there's something wrong with the parents. Small children need the help of adults to get to school on time. In the case of elementary school aged children I would say yes. When kids get to be teenagers in middle and high school, it's a different story. By that age I think teens should be responsible enough to get themselves to school on time. Some kids purposely ditch certain classes. In that case I don't think it's fair to hold parents responsible. I think teens should be punished for ditching their classes. Maybe they should be forced to do detention or Saturday school; if they continue, make the punishment even harsher. Perhaps if you've been absent a certain number of days you shouldn't be allowed to graduate until you make up those hours. Or maybe they could require teens to complete some sort of community service to make up those hours. I think it's time that we make people responsible for their own actions.

The teachers role is to 'teach'. Parenting and the difference between 'right & wrong' is primarily down to the parents. It is obviously wrong to miss school and thus that falls into the parents domain. If a kid is bunking off school then the school should inform the parent and then it is down to that parent to deal with the problem. A teacher is not responsible for a child being allowed by the parent(s) to miss school! If the parent(s) allow that child to miss school then effectively 'they' as guardians are breaking the law!
A 'child catcher' like in Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang how ever might have a legal obligation to keep (with the use of force) a child on the premises and any escaping child would be his or her responsibility!

I think a well bought up child would not truant off school - there are many reasons why children truant and some are parent allowed - or the parents don't care. Children sghould go to school or will get left behind in life.

What parent doesn't want their kids to get a good education?

If their truanting is a signal of another problem (like child abuse) then they should be prosecuted for that, but I don't see how parents can do more.

Prosecuting a good parent with a 'bad' child is not going to help anyone.

i missed a load of school when i was a kid, most of it my parents knew about but did not care. maybe if there was the threat of a prision sentance they would have tried to make me go to school. It does comes down to parenting, but there has to be a stage when the child is old enough to realise what they are doing. It happened to me at 15 when i realised the only person i was harming was myself
