The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Becoming an Architect : A Guide to Careers in Design by Lee Waldrep
* The Survival Guide to Architectural Internship and Career Development by Grace H. Kim
* Architect? A Candid Guide to the Profession by Roger K. Lewis

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

If you are starting the business in USA, include some time with a tax consultant (enrolled agent or CPA) during your planning stage. You will learn critical things about expenses you need to anticipate. For example, until you have your first paying client, the IRS doesn't consider you to be a legitimate business. I invested a fair bit in start up expenses before I found out they weren't deductable last year because I hadn't sold anything yet. I didn't even get to itemize when they were through with me. In all the books I read, that little tidbit was left out.

Nearly every successful business starts with a good business plan. It will remind you to ask the right questions, and you will need it when you look for funding.

1. collect your best portfolio, organize it. add narrative and some design. make copies: frame it in your office, in your hardcopy portfolio, in website and in presentation format.
narratives: what is the concept of your design which will explain the customer how you are different from other architect (so that they can see your point, and interested in your design concept, differentiate to others). This will attract people.
2. start advertise and promote your work. Make nice business card. design of your business card must show you are an architect, and a different one. go out to high-class coffee shops, bars, other hang out places and socialize... give out your name cards... try to be invited to important events /party. always bring your name card... dont give away to everybody, but you have to plan, strategize, observe, and nail a few people, then choose one, and drill down about your architecture skill... hope the person will always remember that you are good architect... and will always refer you to their friends...
3. do not forget to follow up, every call, even the chance for success is not so big, treat each call as a serious prospect.. this is to give impression how serious you are with your business.
4. office, can be small, perhaps in your studio, but should be nicely setup. for architect, customer care about the creativity, experience and great concept (=quality).
5. always have a number people can call. cel phone will be great. if you havent got one, try to get a number people can remember easily. also, pay attention to your recording on answering machine.
6. in my opinion, many people choose to work with architect they know from someone else /referral (word of mouth) as the best promotion. this is why I recommend you how to do it.
will be hard in the beginning. keep your overhead as low as possible. but once you break the ice, if you do your job well, you will be successful. good luck.

By law you must get a small business license, the government building where you live will give you all the details of what you need to do and that will start you on your way. I'm sure you could call and they will send you the information also. You can start working on a plan with the information they will give you.

Good Luck!

Do you have a PE license? Do you have a clientele that you've established? Try connecting with a consulting firm or a good employment head hunter. If you have no experience I would suggest you seek out hooking up with another archetect to get the experience you need before you strike out and open doors of your own.

You'll need good mechanical and electrical, and structural engineers to work with you as well. These people do not come cheap! You'll need to have one of these to have a PE license to stamp drawing as well.

You need to do alot of homework on business practices and procedures before you just open doors for business. A business plan, state and city tax, State registration etc.

Check with your local Small Business Association. They will point you in the right direction, and can show you how to start a business, apply for grants/loans, and how to maintain your business.

A boss once told me if you don't know where to start....pick up a stone and throw it...and start there! Just start! So, for starters you would need to formulate a business plan and really think out what you want to do...specifically...start with that and then do what it takes to set the "plan" in motion.
