I think what you use should depend on the time of day. For smoky eyes in the daytime, just use a little kohl eyeliner and a complementary eyeshadow (shadow first, liner second, and blend last) are sufficient. In the evening, like when you're going out to a club or a party or something, maybe the kohl to get the eye lined the way you want, smudged just right with a Q-Tip or other appropriate apparatus, and then use a bit of the liquid over it for longevity, crispness, definition, and drama. This time you could use a more dramatic eyeshadow too, and maybe incorporate another more subtle eyeliner into the mix if you're really tryin to get wild.

Other than that, I would say avoid harsh stuff during the day unless you're a serious goth, heroin addict, battered wife, or have some kind of ethnic background. Super heavy-duty eyeliner just looks really alarming and "stark" on fair-skinned and fair haired people during the day if they aren't living the goth listyle, to me. Hehe. But what do I know? I'm all about corpsepaint, remember? *grin*

Seriously though, you can do magic with browns if you are of a fair complexion. Also, I should mention that the shape of your eyes should dictate how you line your eyes. I have almond shaped eyes, so I only line the top from the inside to the outside, and then maybe a third of the lid on the bottom. (I've also been known to line the inner lid with red kohl and wear red mascara... But that's just something I do every once in a while to scare the folks at work. Haha.) I think a good rule of thumb is, if your eyes are round shaped, only line the top. If you have any other shape, you'll just have to experiment and see what you think looks best for you. It's hard for me to be any more specific because I don't know what you look like in real life. But if you just experiment a little bit, I'm sure you'll have it down in no time!

Be well, look smokey, have fun, and if you're not using waterproof liquid eye-liner, pray it doesn't rain while you're outside... Hehe. =) Good luck.

For smoky eyes, use a white eyeshadow on you lids then a grey in the socket line (blend well) then use a black eyeshadow in the corners. Use a liner pencil (a grey one looks better than black) under the eye but don't line the whole eye, it will look too hard just go about half way along. . Also, don't use a dark pencil in the rim, it will make your eyes look small. Use a white one instead to open them up and make them appear brighter. and the secret to sexy and smoky, not cheap and tacky is blend, blend, blend! Don't forget to curl your lashes (heat under a hairdryer first) and use plenty of mascara. Also for a party look you can get some really nice glitter pencils (i think MAC do them)

Use a pencil for this type of effect and stay away from black...use a medium to dark gray or dark purple/lavender for the smoke effect. On the bottom, start from the outside and continue 3/4 inward. Don't go all the way. On the top, start from the outside and continue all the way if your eyes are open set (farther apart) and only half way if your eyes are closed set (closer to the bridge of the nose). Take a powdered eyeshadow using an angular brush to soften the lines and keep the eyeliner from smudging. Good luck!

For sexy, smudgy, smoky eyes you need kohl eyeliner. You can apply loads and blend it in. Don't worry if it smudges during the night - it just adds to the sexiness. Kohl is MUCH easier to use than liquid eyeliner - if you make a mistake, you can blend. As for colour, it all depends on your eyes. I'm blonde so I usually go for grey or brown. Black looks better wth darker skin and hair.

For a more precise, cats eye look you'll need liquid eyeliner. Rest your elbow on a table as this will steady your hand. Other than that, you just need to practice, practice, pratice!

Good luck.

pencil because its easier to get off if you make a mistake. make sure its sharp and dot along as close to the eyelashes as you can get - dont draw a line just dot all the way along. then smudge the dots with a little sponge and you should have a great smokey look.
when putting dark eyeshadow on look down at a mirror by tilting your head back and you will see dark shadows caused by the light and curvature of your eye just below the brow bone and in the outer corners. that is where your dark eyeshadow should go.

Place a mirror so that you are looking down into it,. This helps you see better to put your eyeliner on with more precision. Then smudge it for a 'smoky' look. But don't go over the top or you'll look like a cross between a panda and Michael Jackson.

Try using Bobbi Brown's gel eyeliner with a fine eyeliner brush. You can smudge it for a smokey look......I personally wouldn't apply it in the rim of the eye though

Liquid is very hard to apply if you're not proficient in make-up application. Apply black kohl pencil along where your eyelashes begin and smudge until you reach the desired effect!
