longitude and latitude

X axis is horizontal, Y axis is vertical

If on a map, then usually the longitude lines run top to bottom and would be indexed on the horizontal axis, while the latitude lines run from side to side and are indexed on the vertical axis.

On a UK ordnance survey map, the National Grid references are called Eastings and Northings (Eastings correspond to the X axis and Northings to the Y axis).

In 3-D graphics there are three axes, X, Y and Z. It can get confusing here because some in systems, such as 3-D technical drawings and math diagrams the X and Y axes represent the vertical plane that is facing you as you look at the diagram and the Z axis is the distance backwards, in other systems, such as games software and some 3-D modelling, the X-Y plane is horizontal and the Z axis is vertical.

In a two-line grid, they are called X and Y.

The horizontal one is the x-axis, and the vertical one is the y-axis.
