Imperialism: Form of government done by an emperor. An emperor is like a king, with the exception that he/she generally becomes so by force, not right. (Napoleon was emperor of France, not king; Victoria was Queen of Britain and Emperatrix of India). The territory over which an emperor exercises government is the empire. An empire generally comprises several territories or countries but usually only one country has control over the rest of the other countries in the empire. This is usually the country where the emperor is from or where he/she conducts power from. In the case of the British Empire, England is the country where power resides, all other countries depended on the english king to make rules to be carried on by englishmen in lands far away. This was the case of India, a country of nearly 700 million people (at the time) governed by a handful of people living thousands of kilometers away whom didn´t know their needs, culture, economy, values, etc. The impact was mainly oppression (lack of freedoms and rights) like the infamous salt tax which was a levy people had to pay for using salt, a substance necessary for humans beings to survive. When people followed a suggestion made by Mohandas Ghandi of going over to the seashore and boiling seawater in order to get salt and avoid paying the unjust tax, the "empire" sent in military troops to punish people for "defying the empire in avoiding paying taxes". Throughout history countries generally escape from empires by gaining their independence and avoid further oppression for example: India from Britain and Venezuela from Spain.
