First some background: When our dog was a puppy the neighbor boy threw stones at him and squirted him with waterguns (of course we put a stop to this as soon as we knew) so now he's scared of all men and especially 10-yr old boys. If he gets loose he will bite them (out of fear). He is the sweetest dog with the family. We took him to a proffesional trainer who said "this dog is NOT aggressive, just afraid". We've worked really hard on training him the past year but it hasn't helped and he will be put to sleep tomorrow. He's only 2 ½ yrs.
To get to my question: maybe it's better this way, that he's put to sleep calmly with people he loves while he's still healthy, instead of waiting till he's old and in pain? Do you think so? and if not, imagine that he has a disease now that we don't know about? So if we could keep him that would mean he would be in pain?
Please tell me what you think. Thanks.

Migrant - we can't keep the dog, he is half husky so very strong and can pull everyone except Dad and I over on walks if he decides to pull. That means he has to have a muzzle on which is uncomfortable for him. Of course we care for him, that's why we decided to do this since it seems to be the best for him (going against what we selfishly would want since we love him to death).
Brian Reed - maybe you didn't see where I wrote "we've worked really hard on training him the past year but it hasn't helped". This problem is so deep in him it can't be fixed.

ladybugewa - I know it isn't fair since it's the kid's fault but it can't be helped. He has moved away, so won't bother us any more. He would definately not be suitable for an elderly couple or a retirement home since even we can't handle him. We don't want to give him to a kennel or someplace where he can't be with people because he hates being left alone and has lots of energy. We don't want to give him to another family, either, because then when they can't handle them they'll give him to someone else, who'll give him to someone else and so on - not good for him. Again, we love this dog like crazy and have thought over every other option.

mrandersen - so you think it's better to just keep him? as we can't train him, that means he only gets a walk once or twice a week, he can't go out to meet people and will be alone a lot of the time. I think this would be very unfair to him. It would be a selfish decision to keep him, just because we weren't willing to let go of him.

iam an animal lover...
i had to put two dogs down in the past year and a half...
one a beautiful 14 year old golden shepherd/coyote mix...she got to old and was in more pain then i wanted to recognize...it took a friend sitting me down and opening my eyes to the truth that it was time.
the other..just months before...was a 2 year old jack russel. she had begun having convulsions and the medication wasn't helping anymore...
hmmm...they both went to sleep in my arms...
hmmm...pain for me, but it relieved theirs...

Just take him and leave near to a far away forest and come back. Let nature decide what to do with him? Or if there is a protection center for stray dogs, leave him there.
Get vaccinated before you do so.
Do not kill.....not even for food or for leather items or even mercy killing....Killing in all its meaning is cruel to protect something you think as yours and it is selfish.
Your life and his life are equal. You also will go through disease, old age and death, can your parents kill you by thinking, you will have suffering due to this. Let the dog complete its cycle.

I'd rather put that obnoxious brat to "sleep"!!!! Your dog doesn't deserve this! Give him away to live in a retirement home, or an elderly couple. Please don't kill him. He is innocent, and you have given him the death penalty. You are trying really hard to make it seem like it's better for him, but in your heart you know it's only less trouble for you. He will never feel the wind on his face and never sniff another fire hydrant...

I think the boy should be put to sleep instead! Doing this is wrong! Keep the dog alive, he's not guilty! Specially if u care for him!
.
Just keep him on a leach when walking him, so that he doesn't attack inocent 10-year-old boys out of fear :)

I think it is never right to put an innocent animal to sleep just becase you can't train him properly. The key ingredient to learning is patience.
You have young energetic puppy who still has time to learn. He may have deep impressions instilled in him but he has more time to learn to cope with it if you give him a chance to live.
Why kill the puppy for others? Keep the puppy because you love him and believe in him.

I think your dog simply learnt through his (or her) growth that young humans he doesn't know will harm him. What you need to do is to change that habit. If you have or know a child you know well, tell him (or her) to be kind and gentil to the poor thing. As you do this a couple of times, the dog will eventually learn that not all humans are mean.
I know this because I had the same problem with my cat (lol).

and who gave you the right to play god?
if you really care about someone then you will accept them for who they are.
according to my mum, try to make him realize that little kids are harmless.
we are moving away from the real point which, is the fear inside him.
the best way to overcome that is to face it. try asking help from a 10 year old relative. ask him to either go and play with him and feed him.
if you decide to put him to sleep, please don't tell us for as a dog lover, i would like him to life forever and in my heart he will.
this is my final request. please don't extinguish an innocent soul
