You can build square drums but it will have different kind of sound.All drums produce sound by vibration of membranes.The shape of membrane determines what kind of waves can be excited in them.Round shape is best suited for exciting a large range of waves hence most of the drums are round.

There are square drums.
It is just easyer to make round drums. The stress is spread out more equally and that gives a drum a natural form. Makes it last longer to. Other form s of drums are almost set up to selfdestruct because of the tention stress put on the frame.

In a square, the corners are further away from the side.
So the material that vibrates will be longer at the corner and shorter at the side. When it is struck, it will not vibrate evenly, so to prevent this it is made round.

If you drop a pebble in water, the waves it makes form concentric circles... in a drum, the circle shape best conserves energy to transfer into vibration. Anything else would cause distortion through wave reflections.

Because the sonic waves produced in a circular drum is more profound, while a sqare drum wouldn't produce as much reververations.

The vibrations of a membrane when struck carry circular waves towards the edges. If the edges are not circular, the waves shall be reflected irregularly, resulting in uneven intensity patterns.
