The word research derives from Middle French its literal meaning is 'to investigate thoroughly'.

The scope of the research process is to produce some new knowledge. This, in principle, can take three main forms:

Exploratory research: a new problem can be structured and identified
Constructive research: a (new) solution to a problem can be developed
Empirical research: empirical evidence on the feasibility of an existing solution to a problem can be provided

Research is:
Systematic investigation to establish facts
A search for knowledge

Research is to:
Inquire into
Attempt to find out in a systematically and scientific manner.

Research is an active, diligent and systematic process of inquiry in order to discover, interpret or revise facts, events, behaviours, or theories, or to make practical applications with the help of such facts, laws or theories. The term "research" is also used to describe the collection of information about a particular subject.

My favourite subject is science and I like knowing about all those gadgets and all. For eg. I wanted to know how does Radio transmitters and recievers (like mobile phones) work. So I researched for it. I can list some steps that help you research and this shows that research is a systematic way to know things.

1) Familiarize yourself to the subject to be researched.
2) Write down all the sources from where you can know about the subject. e.g. internet, library.
3) Search for the subject.
4) Take notes.
5) Understand it.
6) Anything more if you want to do.

Thus research is to know about the things in a systematic way.

Research is needed to know about the things in more detail
