First change the name of the project to saving endangered animals. An extinct species can not be saved because it is already wiped out.

I think a nice project may be on the condor breeding programs.

There is a lot of information on the web.

Questions you could ask are:

1.) Describe one of the species of condor. Get pictures and maps to show where this condor is found. On a map draw the route you will have to drive to visit the condor.
2.) How many of this species of condor are still alive.
3.) Why are there so few condors?
4.) In their natural habitat what can be done to stop condors being killed?
5.) Design a huge house for condors to live in and breed. How big will it be, what trees would you plant in it? How would you feed and water the condors living there?
6.) baby condors can't be fed by humans otherwise they will think they are human not condors. Make a puppet that could be used to feed a condor baby.

Habitat loss and destruction is the reason we are threatening and losing our animals. Too many people on earth and we need more land. Making insurance colonies to save the species is a nice idea, but if they don't have a place to live, it doesn't matter how big the insurance colony is. To be very pessimistic, there is very little we can do to save the animals, except get rid of humans. I know there are many efforts and projects by WWF and other organization, but most are slowly losing out. We're losing so many more species than we are gaining or saving.

As for your presentation, 5-8 year old are not that young. I used to teach kindergarten and now I teach 7-8 year olds. For the 7-8 year olds, I would bring up serious issues, depending on the scope of your presentation.

I would pick an animal or two. Perhaps a local animal and then one famous one like panda or tiger or whales. Talk about habitat loss, poaching, pollution, road kills, etc., reasons for losing animals. Be careful when you bring up poaching, since it's rich people paying high prices for animals from poor people. Also bring up poverty as a reason people poach in developing countries.

As a wrap up, have students suggest solutions as well. Good luck.

See if there is an endangered species in your area that will benefit from your project. If not, at least get them thinking in the right direction by creating a backyard habitat:

It can teach them how to develop an area for wildlife to live and multiply. There is a lot the kids can do and they will feel satisfaction at seeing the fruits of their labor.
