Fungi reproduce by 'spraying' spores into the air. These settle on things like food, for example, and feed off the sugar. The disgusting blue and white lumps that occur is the mould, several of these 'spores' together.

The mould is the aggregate form of a microbe which thrives on a source rich in moisture and carbohydrates. Penicillin was made from one of the species.
