Homo erectus was the first hominid to migrate out of Africa -- starting around 1.5 m.y.a. and reaching Java and China by 1.2 m.y.a. -- bringing to an end the period for which Africa was the lone home for humankind's ancestors. Skin tone and difference races among the homo erectus hominids resulted from adaptations to the climate and sun.

Increases and decreases in skin pigmentation became a crucial way of adapting to the diverse climate zones that humans, especially modern humans, came to inhabit. Skin coloration is strongly correlated with ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels and latitude.

The term 'race' usually refers to skin coloration and language/cultural differences. The short answer for so many races is that each group adapted to the environments separately...common languages or customs were lost and new ones were developed over 30,000 to 150,000 years ago.

Africa. Different races are the result of founder effect and physical isolation for long periods.

Natural selection, black people make obvious targets in colder climates as well as not having other physical attributes that work better in snow ie light colored hair and eyes more body fat. in hotter areas they stayed black for millenia, some warm areas were later overwhelmed by lighter skinned tribes from the north.
