The word originally just means an empty space surrounded by some kind of membrane or structure. You can have a prison cell, a computer cell, or a biological cell and several others.
As a matter of curiosity, biological cells were called cells eventhough they aren't empty, because when they were first seen under the microscope back a few hundred years ago, they were thought to be empty "air bags" in the body!
