Read "Applied Cryptography" by Bruce Schneier - It's a comprehensive academic survey of the field of Cryptography.

If you want to have real fun, why not take a look at Stephen Wiesner's work on 'quantum money', and the extension of the concept to 'quantum cryptography'. I'm sure you can Google up references!
