History is the written record of past events. Writing began roughly 5000 years ago. Before writing, all events were Prehistoric or before history. All events after writing are considered historic. History began with the written word.

History comes from Herodotus the Greek who first started to write a journal about his travels around the world. He compiled it into the first history book deatailing the 7 wonders of the world etc... a lot of it was bullshit though. Anyways, it was his story of what happened, ie history.

history, in its broadest sense, is the story of humanity's past. It also refers to the recording of that past. The diverse sources of history include books, newspapers, printed documents, personal papers, and other archival records, artifacts, and oral accounts. Historians use this material to form coherent narratives and uncover linked sequences and patterns in past events. Most histories are concerned with causality, that is, why certain outcomes happened as they did, and how they are linked to earlier events.
