That depends if you think imperial measurements are better, I like metrication, and so no they did not have enough power, they took to long and faile to achieve there goal, I am still 6' and not 183cm people still think in LBS and not Kilos, and we still buy in pints well at least in the Pub, if not at the supermarket.
I wonder if it will change, but even my kids think in feet and inches and they have never been taught it?

That depends in what country you are. I'm in the US and it's all imperial--no one understands metric units. Only imported things or things that are also packaged for export have metric notes on them. I'm told the US are the only country to use the imperial system nowadays--does this mean they are the only imperialist country left? :)
I do appreciate the imperial units for certain design purposes, but for weighing, measuring, calculating stuff the metric system is much, much easier to use.
