A guitar which does not rely upon an amplifier to be heard is often called 'acoustic'. There are many different types of 'acoustic' guitars (including Spanish) and a huge variety of electric guitars.
There are also guitars which are both, called electro-acoustic, which can be played un-plugged or amplified. These instruments look, feel and play like acoustic guitars.
Choosing depends upon which type of music you intend to play, and upon the size of your hands.
A traditional acoustic guitar will have nylon strings (less painful on the fingers) but will have a wide neck and high action (distance between the string and fretboard) which is difficult for small hands. Unless of course you select a three-quarter size instrument. These guitars a ideal for classical music and finger styles rather than strumming.
It really does depend upon what you intend to play, and even then you might end up with several guitars for different purposes (for what I play I have a solid-body electric, a steel string acoustic and an elecro-acoustic 12-string).
Go to a shop and try the different types - take a friend who can play.

I've been playing off and on for about 10 yrs and I've owned and tried out a LOT of different guitars. As for a beginner acoustic guitars, I would recommend either Fender or Alvarez. The ones I tried were very reasonable for the quality... about $300(US) new. For the price, theyre a well made guitar and hold decent resale value. If you decide that it isnt a hobby you want to stick with, you'll at least not have to take a huge loss on the instrument. Do yourself a HUGE favor and avoid the Esteban infomercial and remember that practically any guitar under about $200 new will probably be more useful as firewood than an instrument within a year's time.

A Spanish guitar usually has plastic strings and no pick guard and is slightly smaller.. A different sound for sure..
You need to get a regular Acoustic guitar with a light action.. You can Play anything on it.. Metal strings and better made.. It is the usual guitar for most folks.
UNLESS you are gonna play salsa music.. Then you want the Spanish guitar.. Good luck and have fun.. I love my guitar.. I have an acoustic too. God Bless, {:-)

the universal guitar would just be a steel string acoustic, it would help you develope calluses faster and are used for more styles than a "spanish" guitar also known as a classical guitar, which have nylon and are only used for classical music. I'd say if you're starting find a cheaper acoustic guitar (not under $100) but go to your local music store and ask a sales associate to help find a descent starter guitar

theres little difference b/w a spanish & an acoustic, it can be used interchangibly. buy fender, yamaha, ibanez, gibson...these are some of the good names...u get smaller acoustic guitars which may be more suitable for girls, make sure ur comfortable with the guitar before u buy it...dont be hasty, take ur time in chosing a good one, preferably take someone who plays the guitar along with u. if u were in Chennai, India i couldve helped u!!
