Because he is surprised by the size of the bite radius. or perhaps he is trying to remember the scientific name for a white shark. It could also be that he looked past the remains and saw the coroners report that the girl was killed by a boat propeller.It has been so long since I've seen "JAWS" i can not remember precisely. Hope you find out for sure you have me thinking about it.

I remember seeing the movie several times in the theatre when it came out......"This it what happens when people swim in the water with sharks". they cut it out im guessing because it s not a true statement, and it scared people too much. I became a scuba instructor because of the movie and remember the time I watched it and it was cut out,,, and figured they got wise to the line.

when somebody dies, the body gets these excess gasses built up in them, which in due time basically stink. so when the man cut him open, these gasses are realised and smell basically like a bad fart
