Reason 1: To make a quick buck. Reason 2: So that todays people will want to watch a classic movie. I've gotta say I'd rather watch the newer version of 'House on Haunted Hill' than the old one because i t is in black and white, and the video and audio quality aren't that good

It depends on how classic is classic. If movie houses remakes Superman that is like in the 80s, that's not classic. But Charlie Chaplin movies, that is a classic remake. But would only be compounded in ridicule. But nice question, you seem to pose loss of quality if movie houses has no original material to work on. there are dvds of classic movies. watch them.

i know it drives me mad why not re-make the films that did ot do so well
the only remakes that i like is like when they do old film in teen versions like
Love Story - A Walk To Remember
Mid-Summer Nights Dream - Get Over It!
The Taming of the shrew - 10 Things i hate about you
Othello - O
Fatal Attracion - Swim-fan
or when they re-make old classics for the new generation like
Titanic
pearl harbour
romeo & juliet
other then that they are pretty crap

Examples:
The Ladykillers

Get Carter
The Hills Have Eyes
Texas Chainsaw Masacre
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
They've ALL been ruined by remakes and it's gotta stop!

many people look around and see progress; i look about and see decay. it's much the same with music, originality has gone out the window. the real question here is why do people support unoriginal trash?
at first look i immediately thought of King Kong, but as i scanned down i noticed someones list of several others, shameful.
i guess it's like the teenage wannabe rock star standin there sayin 'i could do that, i could do it better,' never considering that part of the appeal is the originality. it's like my grandfather used to tell me, "There is nothing new under the sun," a line he'd stolen from somewhere.

Hollywood has gotten lazy and won't sign up fresh and talented screenwriters to put out original material. So as a result, they go back an re-hash everything from Godzilla to the Pink Panther.
You prettymuch have to make your own movie on your computer if you want to see something new.
