Canning foodstuff can indeed help preserve them for quite a bit more.
In most girls' schools, they are already teaching the canning process - in the home science classes.
Schoolboys are normally not taught about canning - as they are least interested in the preparation or preservation of foodstuff ! But your idea that it should is a sensible one - and reveals that you are not an MCP !

Canning is as canning does.... but i think canning was banned from schools about the same time as the evolution debate was going on.
