I would be tempted to call Northern Ireland part of the mainland too.
Albeit seperated by the Irish sea, technically it is still a big part of the kingdom regards land mass, therfore, I would describe it as being one of the main parts of the land...... Mainland !!
Imagine....If I was stuck on an island(i.e not on the mainland) in the middle of Irish sea/Atlantic Ocean and I had to get to the mainland I could go to Scotland, Wales ,England OR EVEN Northern Ireland. Either way I would have made it to mainland U.K

The official name for the UK is: "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland"
Mainland UK is also sometimes referred to as "Great Britain". This is the name of the larger island with England, Scotland (to the north), and Wales (a peninsula in the west).

All areas of England, Wales and Scotland that are linked by land.
So this excludes most of the Scottish Islands, Hebrides, Mull, Shetlands etc and also Isle of Man, Isle of Wight and so on.
I hope this helps you.
