by requesting for a "return receipt"
Your mail settings will allow your to do that (if you use something like thunderbird or outlook)

On thunderbird (which I use), open a mail composer and then go to options and you get the "return receipt" option
Something similar will exist for Outlook as well.

But remember that the receiver is informed that a receipt will be sent and (s)he can choose to not send it.

I dont think any of the webmail applications let you do this though

In outlook express you can select the option in Tools " Request Read Receipt"

However this only works if the receiver has Outlook Express(OE)

If your not using OE then there is no way.

There are however 3rd party addons but they are not FREE. http://www.readnotify.com

You can't. You could ask the receiver to confirm receiving the e-mail...
