Oh how beautiful! Of course, it's really the fact that the chlorophyll is coming out of the leaves in preparation for winter. The brilliant colors are their real colors, and the green that we see all Spring and Summer just covers this up.
So, in a sense, you're absolutely right. The trees dream of showing their true colors and, for a few weeks in autumn, Mother Nature lets them do just that.

Autumn leaves are very nice and diverse. Without any biological reason to be such. They are not flowers, which have to attract insects. But not less colourful. A real mistery. Maybe signalisation about coming cold period for the rest of ecosystem, incuding humans? But how selection could happen?
Once the question about their significance is not answered, your statement is one of many possible and very serious versions.

Poetic thought, but 'fraid not. It's the fact that the red and gold colour pigments last longer than the green when the leaf is dying.
