HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH
Banishment is Not the Answer
January 31, 2005

By Corinne Carey, published in San Francisco Chronicle

A four-time sex offender who readily acknowledges his crimes, Cary Verse does not ask for our sympathy. But his very existence is leaving a small community in Contra Costa County with no choice but to deal with child sexual assault. It may be that the most effective approach is grounded in compassion and an acknowledgement of the humanity of even the most egregious offenders.
Verse has been searching for a home for more than two years—a search that spanned the length of California yet turned up few willing to take a chance on him. Those who came forward to help were hounded by relatives and neighbors and withdrew their offers. Driven by community protests from transient hotels to shelters and from town to town for the past year, Verse will now appear before a judge on Friday to hear whether the community of B

I really believe that just locking up criminals and throwing away the key isn't the way to solve the problem. These people are just that....people. They have problems like everyone else and they too have a desire to be happy just like everyone else. I feel that they should be separated from the rest of us, however, I think they should also be looked at closely to see if there isn't some way that they might be helped. Of course, its one thing to have rehabilitation in prison but when you get out mingle amongst society again I'm thinking it must be hell for an ex convict. Society, those people who scream asks how can people be so cruel to the point they wind up in prison but society never finds that the answer lies right there in themselves. As you point out in your paragraph no one is willing to take a chance on this guy which would most likely make this guy resort to his criminalistic ways and do harm to another person and why shouldn't he its not like anyone cares about his wellbeing. They don't know what he's been thru in his life, they've never walked in his shoes. Even criminals have suffered. I don't condone the man's behavior but I don't think he's a monster either. By the way, I'm from Mars.

No it is not a good idea. Mr. Verse paid his debt to society. He is supposed to now be guaranteed the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. If I had a house in CA he could move right in. I don't take flack from others. I tend to help people. You will find in helping people, you will be rewarded. Maybe not right away but at sometime.

Banishing sex offenders has the therapists concerned that it will cause recidivism. No place to live, no place to work, a lot of stress because of it is likely to cause a reoffense.

Since when did the USA become a communist country anyway? Does no one believe in the Bill of Rights and the U.S. Constitution anymore?

"""" in compassion and an acknowledgement of the humanity of even the most egregious offenders."""""

Compassion for that piece of worthless, less than human, life form.. Where is your compassion for his VICTIMS???? You know, those helpless CHILDREN that he changed the lives of FOREVER... He damaged beyond repair.

OH POOR HIM...

He deserves NOTHING.. He should have been put to death. There is NO cure for a sexual deviant. What ever your sexual kink is, IS what it is.. He WILL hurt another child and another until people like YOU quit condoning the actions of these kind of horrible child molesting pieces of garbage. He is useless and should never be able, to be let out in, the range of children EVER....

He should have done. to him. what he did to those children, then they should cut his privates totally off and give him a bag to collect his body waste and then they should brand a huge CM in the middle of his forehead and then set him loose..

Pity and compassion??? I sincerely doubt he showed any for his victims..

What a crock!!!!!!!!!

I dont really know. They are human too... who are just sick. I think that there should be better help for them. Maybe something different. I understand completely about how people hate them and I think in a way they have the right to you know? Its a touchy subject in society now a days and something needs to be done about it. Children need to be safe.

You made your choice. You need to live with it. If that means being ostrocized (sp), banished, castrated, etc that is what you need to deal with. YOU have no idea of the pain and suffering you have caused your victims. They will have to deal with that the REST OF THEIR LIVES. So cry a little, whine, pull your "ex offender" line all you want....you have still screwed with someone's psyche more than any person could ever screw with yours.

Personally i believe his home should still be prison for the rest of his life. I don't blame anyone who doesn't want him in there town or neighborhood. why shouldn't his life be hell just like the way his actions made the child he abused.

They shouldn't be let out of jail in the first place. Those people are 99.9% repeat offenders. I say hang the bastards along with the rapists. We waste precious tax payer dollars on crap like this when we could rehabilitate the drug addicts and let them out of jail instead.

Seriously, the best way to deal with sex offenders is to castrate them, take away the equipment, take away the urge and ability!
