United States: Thousands of Children Sentenced to Life without Parole
National Study by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch Finds Majority Face Life for First Offense
(New York, October 12, 2005)—There are at least 2,225 child offenders serving life without parole (LWOP) sentences in U.S prisons for crimes committed before they were age 18, Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International said in a new joint report published today.
While many of the child offenders are now adults, 16 percent were between 13 and 15 years old at the time they committed their crimes. An estimated 59 percent were sentenced to life without parole for their first-ever criminal conviction. Forty-two states currently have laws allowing children to receive life without parole sentences.
The 157-page report, The Rest of Their Lives: Life without Parole for Child Offenders in the United States, is the first national study examini

No, these children should not be given life without parole. I imagine many of them had an abusive childhood. In situations like that, did they really know better? They lived abuse their entire lives!! I am not saying this is true for all of them, but I am certain it is so for many of them.
The best thing that could be done for these children is a lot of one on one counseling, as well as group therapies. We can't allow children to be treated in this manner. All of you know that many children are abused incessantly. Don't think for one minute that it won't make them do something drastic!! Get these children out of prisons and into therapy where they can learn to live productive healthy lives!!!

let's get real here. If a juvenile offender (under the age of 18) get s sentenced to life imprisonment, they had committed a terrible crime. Add to this that in order to commit someone you had to find them guilty without a reasonable doubt + you must find that they committed thier crime with full knowledge and intention of thier actions. Now you want to let those little sadists out of prison to run free on your streets? A life sentence is not just handed down upon a convict easily! I must add though that i don't believe in putting juveniles in prison with adults and I think that they should split the 16-18 year olds from the younger ones. People do care... but be real.

There is a fine line here. I worry about the 11 and 12 year olds that get convicted as an adult. Yes I know they committed an adult crime, however the understanding of the permannce and long term consequences are literally not developed in their brains.
Now an 18 year old convicted of raping his 15 year old girlfriend KNOWS the law and should be convicted...lifetime? I am not qualified to answer that as there must be other circumstances.

Common sense says at the age of 13 all kids know exactly what they are doing is either right or wrong...many believe they can do anything they want because they are minors & their records will be sealed when they are 18....which only makes it an easy way out for what they do...after they turn 18...they are STILL in the habit of killing,stealing,raping...etc... it's a proven thing....Just seeing how many juvelines are committing adult crimes is proof they feel they have a right to & don't think they should pay for taking someone's life due to their age.......look how many repeat offenders there are on our streets,in our schools and in our play grounds...
I think if they all know they will go to jail for life....they will have to admit they have no excuse for their violent behavoirs..or lack of self control...any kid over 10 knows picking up a gun & shooting their parents is wrong..PERIOD !!! Once they have killed one time,,,the next time is easier.

Of course people care. But this question is too vague. For instance, you don't specify whether these first convictions are primarily for violent crimes. That may be an important factor.
A fifteen-year-old is hardly a "child." Even a thirteen-year-old is old enough to take responsibility for his actions, including actions that lead to a criminal conviction.
I'm sorry for any teenager in prison, or any adult in prison. But nobody gets an automatic exemption from the law just because of age.

Caring and the law are really two different things. We had a below 12 years of age child raper here locally that was a minor and he got 15 years, and the state just made it a minimum of 25 years per offense.
I care, but what do you do for these people, a mental hospital may do more harm than good. So where do we put them?

Life should be set aside for worse crimes but there needs to be a severe enough punishment for first-time offenders so they won't want to do it again. I don't think that if you get life you were just having sex with your bf or gf. I have heard of tens molesting younger children(3,4,5.......etc...) Those kids should have a harsh sentence but not life.

yes, i care. that's why you don't get caught doing what your doing. kids are easily mixed up with things. they say the wrong things at court or talked to a police officer at school, most are unaware of their rights. and it is very sad. and sometimes its right for them to be locked up, but they're kids. you lock somebody up in a cage forever and that is just in humane. i don't know all stories. killers and such. yes, it is right for them to be there. but, people can change with the right treatment. and jail hardens people
