If you know that your items are infested with bed bugs, but bed bugs are not established elsewhere in your home, there are a couple of options.

The first would be to get rid of the items. That would be the simplest and most effective.

If that is not an option, then either heating or freezing the items will kill off the bed bugs.

Heat over 120 F for a few hours will kill off even the eggs, and essentially sterilize the items. Depending on where you live, this can be achieved by sealing the items in plastic bags and leaving them in the sun. You must be sure that the entire interior achieves the desired temperature however, or you won't kill them all.

Higher temperature heat can kill them quickly too. Steam cleaning can be effective, but may not be possible depending on the item. I.e. there is no way to effectively steam clean a mattress such that the interior is rendered bed bug free.

Again depending on where you live, cold temperatures might be another option. Two solid weeks of temperatures below freezing should be sufficient to kill off any bed bugs. Again, you must ensure that the minimum temperature is achieved throughout the entire object before bringing it inside again.

Bed bug infestations in a home can be very difficult to get rid of. Even experienced exterminators may require several attempts before they get them all.

Good luck.

Try bathing occasionally and change you sheets more than once a year. Bed bugs are associated with dirty people.

You can take a number of steps, but unfortunately the final one is going to be some kind of insecticide. There are liquids, as well as powders, on the market today that are specifically for this purpose.

Here's a site with info on steps to take:

Did you just return from Australia? I read they are having terrible problems with them this year and it is affecting tourism.
