The Bible only says that it's a sin to "take the Lord's name in vain". In other words, to use God's name (Jesus) as a swear word, that would be sinful. To use God's name (God is NOT a name..it's simply a word used to describe an omnipotent entity) in a manner that treats it without respect would be considered a sin.
Now as for other swear words:
To some degree, thier use does denote a lack of class, or lack of the intelligence required to find more suitable language. Sometimes, the use of vulgar language indicates a person's lack of emotional control or a lack of control over thier mouth.
While I spent many years in Christian ministry surrounded by people who did not use vulgar language (as the secular world knew it), they in fact used thier own forms of expression of outrage, anger, surprise, etc. by virtue of substituting words or phrases that were significantly toned down.
All people swear. Regardless of class, ethnicity, culture, economic status, or level of religious devotion. Some terms/words/ phrases/ are more harsh than others, but every person does it to some degree.
The key for you to learn is: when is it an appropriate time to speak that way, and when is it not? To what degree will you allow your language to be harsh? Will you substitute your own words in lieu of tradtional curse words?
You have to learn your audience, and to whom you are speaking. Keep in mind, how you speak often will reflect on the character of your person. The choices are yours, and only yours to make.
Here are two points you should also consider:
Matthew 12:35-37 (King James Version) A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.
36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
James 3:1-18 (King James Version) 1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.
2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
3 Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.
4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.
5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:
8 BUT THE TONGUE CAN NO MAN TAME; IT IS AN UNRULY EVIL, FULL OF DEADLY POISON.
9 THEREWITH BLESS WE GOD, EVEN THE FATHER; AND THEREWITH CURSE WE MEN, WHICH ARE MADE AFTER THE SIMILITUDE OF GOD.
10 OUT OF THE SAME MOUTH PROCEEDETH BLESSING AND CURSING. MY BRETHREN, THESE THINGS OUGHT NOT SO TO BE.
11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.
14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

If you claim Christianity, then do all you can not to swear. It will make your testimony shine brighter. If you do swear, you will give the world more ammunition to disrespect Christians.
If you choose to "bless God", then do not swear.

Which words exactly? Do they come with different levels of "badness"?
I knew someone who is a Christian and they said that "damn" was a sin (because it's like damning and hell).
I am a Christian too but it just seemed like religious observance to me. If you feel that way I don't think swearing in the right circumstances is bad. It's just like expressing yourself, thats all it is.
You did'nt say why you thought it was bad. Why not? if it's an adult who claims to know has told you it is wrong I would say they want too much influence where it shouldnt be felt in your life. I think swearing is only bad when you hurt another and if it extends your hate.
Simply not swearing is a personal opinion and NOT somthing that need be said in Bible study, it's NOT a pre-requirement to being saved and it's absolute nonsense if someone tells you you can't to be a Christian.
It's not neccesary to refrain from swearing. Anyone who says differently is denying the adequacy of Jesus sacrifce for us and saying we need to do more. What nonsense and frankly, exclusive approach to religion.
Please dont think your not allowed to be human YOU ARE. And you are human so don't let anyone tell you you need to be perfect. Its imposible you can try but no one can! So dont beat yourself up over it.
Also, if you don't swear, what might you think of others who do? It's not good to lose contact with what non-Christians are actually like or you will end up judging them and that is NOT the idea!
I swear when I pray sometimes and have never seen it as wrong. Also you can say many bad things without actually swearing, don't look on swearing as THE great evil to be avoided as its not the main way harm is inflicted on others. Far from it.
However many times you hold back from swearing, God will love you to say good things that build ppl up far far far more because it helps someone else and helps you love others. Rememeber "Without love I am but a gong or clanging cymbal??". That applies here in a BIG way!

I am an educated woman, I know words that can express how I feel and yet I sometimes curse. I don't like that I do it. There are better ways to make your point and be heard. It is a lousy habit, but one that can be broken. I think cursing is very bad because we have begun to turn a deaf ear to it. It seems to me that young people use foul language as verbs much too often. Hope this helps.

Cursing has its place. There are times when you really need to express some strong feelings, so I think it's good that we have curse words. I do think they're overused. BTW, where exactly does it say anything about cursing in the Bible?

we are all human and curse no matter who you are. whether being by ourselves or with others we all do it. in gods name is a sin that your refering to. ask for forgiveness and you will get it. to some its bad and others its not. i know many people who are very religious and curse, but as soon as they use gods name they ask for forgiveness. as society goes along in the years. more things become the norm. in the fifties it was like leave it to beaver kind of way. times change and so do people.

I agree with you, cursing is bad and God is hurt whenever He hears someone curse. In His word He says either say nay for no or yea for yes. The tongue is a hard thing to tame but with God's help it can be done. Blessings,

I do not think cursing is bad. But should be kept for those really bad times else it loses its power if you curse all the time.
