Satellite communication is usefull for long range communications. High frequency comm signal is propagating in a straight line. However, the earth curvature make a straight line path difficult to achieve over a very long range (i.e from jakarta - paris).

In this situation we can use satellite to overcome the earth curvature. Satellite acts as a mirror high in the sky. It reflecting (and also amplify) a comm signal from a transmitter in Jakarta to a remote receiver in paris.

Remote sensing is another application of satellite. Remote sensing systematically photograph earth from space.
