In all robotic technology that exists today, they are either controlled totally by remote, or have inbuilt programming, written by humans, that stictly defines and limits the robots abilities. I believe the key to preventing robots from taking over in the future is to hold that line of defining and limiting each robots abilities.
There are programs being written as we speak, one of which is being developed by my own Dad, which are knon as Artificial Intelligence (AI), which break down the barriers and limitations of the thought processes of the robots 'brain,' yet a robot cannot perform without the physical aspect, some object that said brain controls, and this is where the majority of limitations exist to date. Whether its in fixing the physical to the ground so movement is restricted (like operating room assistants in hospitals), or limiting its purpose and focusing its mind (like robotic vacuum cleaners), or limiting its tools and versatility (like a multidisc CD player).
Robots will certainly become increasingly useful and helpful in years to come, with smarter technological advancments to reduce the human aspect of maintaining our survival, but it can never replace us or remove us, as they require us just as much as we require them.
Sure there are utilities being developed that have many facets, interlinked for ease of use, but as long as there is commercial competition and operation specialisation, the possibility of robots taking over humanity by force is inconceivable and incomprehensible.

Um, what? Have the robots themselves told you this? If so is the robot telling you this resemble a can of paint thinner in a poorly ventilated room?

Robots are everywhere, and they eat old people's medicine for fuel. And when they grab you with those metal claws, you can't break free.. because they're made of metal, and robots are strong.

*Persons denying the existence of Robots may be Robots themselves.
