Don't let the answers about NO homework over vacation upset you. Give your students an assignment: a journal, a scrapbook, a reading list, a "what I did on my summer vacation" essay, an art project, a practical project -- like a lemonade stand -- to report on when they get back to class. They can relax and have fun as well as learn and report about the world around them. It will be interesting to see what they come up with when they all get back to school.

It depends on their age. If they go somewhere for vacation they can make a scrapbook with clippings , glue items , photos, and journal type entries or drawings to demonstrate what they learned that day or something similar to that nature. The scrapbook should be a reflection of each of them therefore none of them will look the same. Make it enjoyable and exciting so they will enjoy doing the assignment and so they won't put it off.

You don't want to do that for the simple reason that none of your students will actually do work over the summer. Kids actually have a life other than school, you know.

Kids need breaks, just like you do. What do you like to do on vacation ? Work ?
I was always upset when my kid said he had homework over Spring or Winter break. You are not only bumming out the kids you are bumming out the parents. We try to plan a nice vacation, then all of a sudden we have to worry about what the kid needs to bring along to do his homework. Have to set a time aside to over see it. Give everyone a break. We all need down time.

If you want to improve their writing skills have them keep a journal all summer.
