Arab men wear clothing that is very loose, often dark colored and layered. It looks as if they are almost wearing large square pieces of cloth draped over them. Women often wear similar attire. I have never really known what it is called. I know there is a lot involved with the clothing, such as modesty and protection from the sun and warm weather. Does anyone know what the clothing is called?

Lily has it right, I second her answer. I would add that clothing varies a lot in the Arab countries, depending on whether you're in Lebanon, with mild climate, with Westernized groups but also muslim conservative groups, or deeper East, where it's very hot and sometimes clothing is dictated by the law, especially for women, as is the case in Saudi Arabia. One other thing, the Abaya is often white not dark colored, to not absorb heat.

It's called "abaya" in Arabic, or "galabya",or "gelbab".
It's written like this:
عبا ية -جلابية-جلباب .
this goes for men and women.

I can freely admit I don't know and there is no shame or dishonor in that...but I have to admit, some arabian gentlemen are quite attractive...thank goodness I am inlove with my husband...
