Modem stands for MOdulator/DEModulator.
Generally speaking, it is a device that both transmits and receives information over a communication medium.
For example, a dial-up modem will take data and convert it into specific audible sounds to transmit over a phone line. The receiving end will interpret those sounds and convert it back into its original data.

There are two basic types of modems. The first is an integrated modem that is a piece of installed hardware in your computer. It connects you to the Internet by dialing your Internet service provider's (ISP) phone number. The second is a Ethernet modem you can buy these at an electronics store or if you purchase DSL the company will usually send you one for free. The second is by far the better.
