Approach it from a consumer's point of view - if you were looking for this particular product or service, how would you find it? Web search? Yellow pages? Blogs? Online forums? etc etc

A simple web search is a good place to start. The phone book is also a good resource since its pages are usually categorized by service or product.

In a general sense, any firm that offers a good or service that satisfies the same "need" is a competitor of the company.
