you game a lot, dont do a lot of alt+tab (window switch or multitask) basicallly working with one program one at a time
amd
if you multitask a lot, (have 10 applications open - wmp, paint, ie , antivirus, word.....) and do programming go for intel
laptops - intel gives better battery life and management.

there are many different models of each, beware that a faster processor generates more heat and will decrease battery life, intel has more safeguards to shutdown the processor when it overheats, amd are cheaper for the same performance, Intel has more market share

Both are fully compatible with Windows, Solaris, and Linux. I prefer the underdog AMD. However, don't take my opinion only. Look at Tom's Hardware http://www.tomshardware.com/ for in depth CPU and other hardware comparisons. The articles are index and sumerized nicely.
