mtv was great when it first came out. now i don't watch it too much because it is not really that good. all they do is have shows. so i guess the answer to your question is because it was mostly videos and music when they first came out.

back in the day they did and actually played stuff you couldn't hear elsewhere but greed got the better of them. now if they do play music it's crap

I know, total misnomer. Once upon a time they did play videos, 24 hours a day - it RAWKED!
