Any chemical that, when mixed with water creates H3O+ ions. The more ions, the more "acidic" it is. Acids usually react with metals.

they have numbers below 7 on the pH scale
they react with metals giving off hydrogen gas
they neutralize bases
they have no affect on the indicator phenolphthalein
they taste sour (not a good idea to taste them)

Most people think they totally disolve the material they are eating away. The truth is they actually break down the material at the molecular lvl and break the atomic bonds the material has. Yeah I am nerd so what hehe
