Modern Jazz Quartet-They were a band who had a strong classical influece, as well as the blues.
Herbie Mann-Great flute player
Dave Brubeck-His use of odd time signatures is phenomenal
Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers-One of the most agressive jazz groups I heard.
Horace Silver-One of the great innovators in hard bop.
Max Roach/Clifford Brown -The dynamic duo of jazz
Ahmad Jamal-Like his Less Is More approach to playing...
Cannonball & Nat Adderley-what can I say? Two brothers who play good jazz music
Weather Report-perhaps the best spacey jazz music you'll ever hear...

For voice I am a really big fan of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Luis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra and Michael Bublã is a really good new artist. Luis is a really talented trumpet player with an interesting voice. He puts his soul into what he does and is in the music he plays. Ella has such a flair for her text as well as the music. Billie is nice a smooth as well a Frank and Michael. Michael gives me chills when he sings. Very nice. :-)

I have many favorites but I'll stick to Art Tatum, the famous pianist. His technique was too monstrous, and he is still called the god of piano by many. He had superhuman skill and lightning speed, so much so, that you could hardly see his fingers moving! When he was playing at little rinky dink clubs in New York City, even heavy giants like Vladimir Horowitz would come and check this cat out 'cause they couldn't believe their ears. Too bad there are only 2 or 3 film clips of him playing. But he recorded plenty.

I love Billie Holiday because she's classy, has the most recognizable voice in history and has the guts to sing "Strange Fruit"...
