There can be a lot things to cause that. One thing is to make sure that it's the result of inbalance in your system: Acid levels (Ph Levels) in your stomach are either too high or too low. Before taking any medicine make sure you'll narrow down to what you actually have: Stomach upset (i.e.: ate something wrong and have a feeling like you want to throw up, it's natural in this case to have an upset stomach)? Or, is it something more serious (i.e.: H.-Pylori Infection)? If you think your Ph Levels are HIGH (it CAN actually be otherwise) and when you'll take the medicine, you might lower it even dangerously further. The imbalance of Ph Levels can result in H.-Pylori infection development as well as ulcers in the walls of the stomach. The Ulcer can be compared to from 1st to 4th degree burns, just like on the surface of the skin, but only on and in the lining of the stomach. In the worst case scenario and if not taking preventative measures, it can actually burn through the lining and cause severe damage (sorry for being so grim) and in that case operation will not be "optional." In the case of the operation, that part of the stomach might be cut out permanently and you'll have smaller stomach. Operations are performed only when the Ulcer has developed much further than it was thought otherwise and is non reversable--for example, amputation is usually performed on the body part when the patient has a 4th degree burn (severe and deepest form of the burn, and skin transplant might be needed if the smaller area is infected). These operations are rare, but they do happen to a lot of people.

The virus (H. Pylori Infection) can and does actually live in the stomach without ever bothering anybody untill that pesky moment when the stress and anxiety levels are through the roof and cause a major imbalance in the Ph Levels of your stomach. There are about 400 different variations of the infection and a lot of people have it (yes, even me). Both sides usually manage to live in harmony and at the other times the infection usually lets the person know that something's not right. This virus thrives on the mere imbalance of the system and whenever there's an upset (by stress or otherwise) there's a high probability of developing the Peptic Ulcers (aka "H. Pylori Infection"). Look around you and see what might be causing you either stress or might give you any other problems (no matter how small they are: even not completing your homework on time can do that to you as weel as drinking very hot coffee/tea during the day without letting it to cool off a little bit). It takes time to build up and give you the result of having the infection and the ulcers (the end result).

There are a lot factors that knock it out balance, for example: nutrition, stress (job or otherwise), lifestyle that you have and many other things (like blood pressure and polution). The key "ingredient" to this whole problem might be as simple as a little bit of stress during the day (i.e.: getting a parking ticket), and it might send the Ph Levels rise.

Here's a little bit of additional information about this (If you'd like you can go to www.Ask.com and type in the search window "What Causes Peptic Ulcers?" and it'll give you all the results that you see bellow) :)

Healing it will be challenging in a way that it's on inside of you and not outside where you can see for yourself if the skin burn is getting any better--they really do help a lot faster and better (not to say that medicines are bad) than any other medicine available right now to the public. And, it might require special herbs or teas to eat or drink for it to go away. If you'll be taking modern medicine from this you might accidentally (not meaningly) burn your stomach even more than it already has been. Think of it this way: What would you do when you got a burn? Will you let it cool off and then apply the right medicine to the just burned skin, or will you do otherwise (it'll hurt like there's not tomorrow)? In the case of stomach ulcer ("burn") let it cool off so to speak by not taking any "harsh" medicines for a little while. And, when it'll get better you can use medicine to heal it even further--it'll be like applying Vitamin E or Neosporin to your skin to help speed up the process when the burn itself is gone and all you have is a little scar from it.

Just to let you know there are Alternative Methods and Therapies as well Chinese Medicines and Therapists to treat Peptic Ulcers. You might want to contact one of the offices in your area and ask them couple of questions about this. It does go away at times (not on it's own though), you just have to make sure you won't do anything more to furthermore upset the Ph Levels. Ask the Doctors or caring Professionals about this in further detail (or, go online and see what kind of information they might have), and have all the facts before you before you'll make any decisions either way or even take anything, because any medicine no matter how well meaning can, does and will be able to upset not only your Ph Levels but also your whole system from inside and out.

I hope it helps :) Best of luck to you, be well and take care :)

A bacteria called Helictobactor Pylori more commonly known as H. Pylori causes Peptic Ulcer. The bacteria can usually be eradicated with a stringent regimen of two antibiotics and a proton pump inhibitor (acid pill). Most commonly Amoxcillin and Biaxin along with Prevacid are taken two times daily for two weeks. Your physician may substitute other medications if you are allergic. Typically you will take these medications for two weeks.

This is an expensive regimen of drugs. Often times a doctor will just call in what is called a PrevPac which has all the medications bundled in one package. If you don't have insurance, ask the physician to call in the medications separately because often times it is cheaper then getting them all together in the PrevPac.

**Ulcers are not caused by eating certain foods, coffee, smoking and taking aspirin as others suggest here. However they can be exacerbated by these factors.

Peptic acid, generated in your stomach, an excessive amount of it. Many OTC medications can reduce the amount you generate, thereby allowing the ulcer "sore" to heal.

Stress is a GREAT generator of excessive acid, as are certain foods which are hard to digest, thereby requiring more "acid" to break them down for complete digestion.
