Since liberals can only derive power from judicial activism and taxing the heck out of people and then redistributing the money, if the current personal income tax was abolished in favor of a flat tax or a national sales tax would the liberals be so furious that their heads would explode?

Could they cope with the federal government losing that much control over people's lives? I don't think so. Feel free to disagree. If you do please explain why.

"iamct01" ... I understand your point but, yes, I think it would be just fine for the "rich" to pay the exact same tax rate as everybody else. Why should they pay a higher rate than you?

A flat tax proposed would be 17% with the first $42,000 for a family of four deductible. If you made, as a family, $60,000 you would pay $3,060 in taxes. Someone making $1,000,000 per year would pay $162,860. Isn't that enough? They're paying the same rate as you, which is fair, but they're paying an additional $159,800.

If that's not enough for you, how much is enough? Should the person making $1,000,000 per year pay 95% of it in taxes?

My answer: Probably then they would come up with a way to tax exploding heads.

Jumpingrightin: If you're going to accuse someone of asking an "uninformed question" you might want to try spell check or at the very least grammar check.

Well, a flat tax would hit the middle and lower classes the hardest, so I guess we'd be pretty pissed!

Actually, a graduated income tax is the fairest tax system around. Property taxes hit the elderly and others on fixed incomes. Sales taxes cruicify the poor.

A well-designed graduated income tax places little or no burden on the poor and a minimum burden on the elderly. As you move up the income scale, where you can afford to pay the taxes, your tax bite increases.

Sure, if you're uber-rich you get a big tax bill but the difference is that you can actually AFFORD it.

For example, let's say we trashed the current income tax with a flat 20% across the board levy on all incomes. (Actually, that's not enough to replace the revenue from the current system, but let's use it just for an example.)

Consider the plight of a single mother supporting 3 kids on $15,000 a year. Currently, her tax bite is actually about -$6,000 a year when the child tax credit and earned income credit are applied. After SS taxes are factored in, she has about $18,800. a year to support herself and kids. She survives. Barely.

Now, with a 20% across the board levy, her tax bite is $3000. After SS taxes, she now has about 10,800. She can barely pay the rent now, let alone food, utilities and clothing for the kids.

Get the picture?

"fluffybunnyears" ... you understated the problem a bit. "bostonianinmo" is missing EVERY SINGLE important point, not just the one point. All liberals are this way, they constantly spout off about things that they've never actually researched and pretend that it's all a fact. Global warming is a perfect example.

The problem with "bostonianinmo's" theory is that there is no flat tax proposal that would require anybody to pay a flat tax with no deduction. The question even states this point, but liberals also don't actually read the questions.

The proposal the asker is referring to, I believe, is the one that is put forth by Steve Forbes, and if you can find a person who is more knowledgeable and correct on economic matters than Steve Forbes I'd like to know who it is.

"bostonianinmo" ... redo the "plight" of the single mom in your example except this time use the $42,000 deduction as is stated in the question. In your example the single mom wouldn't pay any taxes to the federal government.

In your beloved graduated tax example I, as an actual taxpayer, am giving her $6,000 per year. How is that fair to me? The difference between the two tax systems is that today she gets my $6,000 in a liberal redisribution of wealth scheme, under a flat tax she gets whatever she earns and nothing from me.

It's not that I'm not compassionate, I support single moms. I support them, for example, by bringing large stacks of one's every time I go to a strip club.

I agree with you. The person who wrote about a single mother of 3 is missing one very important point. Shouldn't that person take some personal responsibility? Why would someone who can't make enough to support themselves choose to have 3 children? I have made the choice to not have children when I was poor because I didn't want my children to have to live that kind of life. If I can be responsible, why can't everyone else? Why should I who has made what I believe to be wise choices and working REALLY hard to raise my income level pay more for those people who made unwise choices? I have compassion but I also believe that people need to think hard before they have children.

Flat tax, so you think it is ok for the richest people to pay the same rate as someone who is making under 30K (which is half of America) I don`t mind paying taxes, taxes are an investment in my country one of the most patriotic things I can do, I would rather have the wages to pay my taxes that is what most Liberals fight for.

A sales tax is hitting the poor the hardest... but a FLAT tax isn't a bad idea...no loopholes, no tax shelters... for corporate and personal... you pay off of what you earn... I don't mind that... many of the wealthy know the loopholes and don't pay anywhere near 30 percent... the government would make billions more than they do now...

I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth. I am going to college right now because of a government funded program- the Montgomery GI Bill and I earned it. I wish I was ahead of the curve coming into the world, but I'm not that lucky.

I'd rather my life be controlled through the tax system than by having the christian right force their bibles down my throat through pointless legislation.

I think your head would, if you actually asked an informed question regarding politics. From your comments, you like a true understanding of the problems and what needs to be done to solve them. Thank of all the american lives lost in Iraq for no good reason, and you continue to avoid this and talk about taxes.

Harris/Eves government implemented a series of tax cuts heavily weighted in favour of corporations and high-income earners. Liberals chose to impose a surtax on middle income earners in the form of an OHIP premium. This budget increases personal income taxes targeted to low and middle-income taxpayers. What are they thinking....?

You have learned the basics of how to argue with a liberal:

HOW TO YELL AT A LIBERAL ....
or.... "Arguing without Listening"

Liberal Lie: "We rushed to war on false pretenses."
Educated Response: "You Hate America!"

Liberal Lie: "The Constitution isn't a political tool."
Educated Response: "Read the Bible!"

Liberal Lie: "The Clear Skies Initiative raises pollution."
Educated Response: "America Hater!"

Liberal Lie: "There is no link between Iraq and al-Qaeda."
Educated Response: "Traitor!"

Liberal Lie: "The tax cuts clearly benefit the wealthy."
Educated Response: "Stop hating America!"

Liberal Lie: "They turned a surplus into a deficit."
Educated Response: "It's Clinton's fault!"

Liberal Lie: "The 2000 Election was a sham."
Educated Response: "You hate, Hate, HATE America!"

Liberal Lie: "I don't hate America."
Educated Response: "Flip-Flopper!"

Remember, it's not about being right.... it's about winning!
