Wild card, When you are driving your fuel demand goes up, air into the engine should go up as well. If the air increases and the fuel does not, then you will run lean. This will cause the engine temp. to rise. When you idle you do not consume as much gas and air flow is probably good for idle gas. You should check your fuel filter. If this does not solve your problem, look at the EGR valve. EGR is not used in idle but becomes active when off idle to cool the engine with exhaust gasses.
Good Luck

Do You have Full Circulation throughout Your Cooling System ? A Sure-Fire Way to determine this is to Switch on Your Heater. Is It Blowing Out Hot Air ? That Indicates that Your Engine and Heater Core are properly Flowing Coolant . I went through the very same thing with my Car. And it's a Chevy. I went to a Local Auto Repair Shop, Willie's Muffler and Radiator Shop, in Goldsboro, North Carolina. After I Told Them just what You've Told Me, They Said, "Start Your Engine, & Open Your Hood". I did. Then, They "Shined" a Fancy Pistol shaped Device that Shined a Laser Pointer on My Radiator. They Pointed it at the Top, Bottom, Left, and Right of My Radiator. There were several different Temperature Readings. They Explained that I had a Stopped-Up Radiator, and that it needed to be Replaced. I Explained that I Flushed Out My System, and asked how could My Radiator be Stopped Up ? They Said that My Radiator [1989] was so Old, that it was totally Stopped Up, and no Treatment would Cure it. Is Your Radiator Original ? See, My Thought was that for a Radiator to be Bad, it had to be Leaking. Wrong ! They Promised Me that if a New Radiator wouldn't Cure My Overheat Problem, it wouldn't Cost Me a Cent ! It Cured My Problem, and I Bet It'll Cure Yours Too ! Read over all the other Answers, and Check out all of the Info. If That still doesn't Work, I Bet It'll be a Stopped Up Radiator !

I had the same thing happen. It could be as little as the cap on the radiator. Is is has a gasket on it that if worn out wont hold pressure. If not that than your clutch fan is wore and not spinning fast enough to cool off water. Good luck

i think it may be warped heads , but a sure fire way to know is to look at yur oil, if its bubbley or if its a different color or a creamy color, thats bad. if not check yur flow, if yur fan turns on yur flow is good, if yur thermostas is installed backwards it wont work, if yur engine was flushed if may be that the flush loosened some rust and clogged somewhere in the block or the radiator, last but not least, check to see if yur cooling sensors are woking , do a voltage check to see if theyre getting juice. good luck

Check the oil dipstick and see if the oil looks foamy. If it is you probly have a blown head gasket or a crack or warped head.White smoke or steam exiting the tailpipe is another sure sign antifreeze is somehow getting into the engine and mixing with the oil.

Check for debris between the radiator and condensor. These are known to accumulate leaves and cigarette buts and such between, blocking air from cooling fins. Also check the operation of your fans.

Unfortunately the 4.0 liter engines usually have problems with the cylinder heads warping, I would bet that is the case.

Sounds like a blockage in the block. Water is not circulating properly.
