I'm trying to find songs about "the one that got away" sort of thing. About someone in a relationship but in love with someone else, like Reba McEntire's "You're the One" or Diamond Rio's (?) "What Might Have Been". Not necessarily country - actually preferably not.

Heart - All I Wanna do is Make Love to You.

I don't know if you're familliar with the song, so I'll explain. She's driving down the road in the rain, and meets a guy who's walking. She takes him to a motel, and they, well... you know. Anyway, years later he sees her again, and she's got a kid with her that looks suspiciously like him. She tells him, no, I'm married, and he thinks this is his son. And then they do it again. You'd have to look at the lyrics. Heart says it better than I do.

Actually... Here:

It was a rainy night when he came into sight
Standing by the road
no umbrella
no coat
So I pulled up along side and I offered him a ride
He accepted with a smile so we drove for a while
I didn't ask him his name
this lonely boy in the rain
Fate tell me it's right
is this love at first sight
Please don't make it wrong
just stay for the night

All I wanna do is make love to you
Say you will
You want me too
All I wanna do is make love to you
I've got loving arms to hold on too

So we found this hotel
it was a place I knew well
We made magic that night. Oh
he did everything right
He brought the woman out of me
so many times...easily
And in the morning when he woke all I let him was a note
I told him 'I am the flower... you are the seed'
We walked in the garden we planted a tree
Don't try to find me
please don't you dare
Just live in my memory
you'll always be there

All I wanna do is make love to you
One night of love was all we knew
All I wanna do is make love to you

1. Brain storm. Scribble or list every emotion that is moving within you on the topic. Especially those silly analogies that come to mind (I'd rather be a hammer than a nail).

2. The recurring thought sequences become the chorus set to work with. They tie together the story line of the verses.

3. Check out the material at the source below. They have books that help one to find words that rhyme.

Think about the tempo of the relationship...is it fast and exciting or slow and rhythmic? Find a musician and work out the tunes to associate and illustrate the emotions.

WhaaaLaaa you have a tune that everybody can relate to...and depending upon performing artist you could have residual checks coming in for years! Remember to copyright the material prior to circulating it to record companies.

Taxi by Harry Chapin

It was raining hard in 'Frisco,
I needed one more fare to make my night.
A lady up ahead waved to flag me down,
She got in at the light.
Oh, where you going to, my lady blue,
It's a shame you ruined your gown in the rain.
She just looked out the window, and said
"Sixteen Parkside Lane".
Something about her was familiar
I could swear I'd seen her face before,
But she said, "I'm sure you're mistaken"
And she didn't say anything more.
It took a while, but she looked in the mirror,
And she glanced at the license for my name.
A smile seemed to come to her slowly,
It was a sad smile, just the same.
And she said, "How are you Harry?"
I said, "How are you Sue?
Through the too many miles
and the too little smiles
I still remember you."
It was somewhere in a fairy tale,
I used to take her home in my car.
We learned about love in the back of the Dodge,
The lesson hadn't gone too far.
You see, she was gonna be an actress,
And I was gonna learn to fly.
She took off to find the footlights,
And I took off to find the sky.
Oh, I've got something inside me,
To drive a princess blind.
There's a wild man, wizard,
He's hiding in me, illuminating my mind.
Oh, I've got something inside me,
Not what my life's about,
Cause I've been letting my outside tide me,
Over 'till my time, runs out.
Baby's so high that she's skying,
Yes she's flying, afraid to fall.
I'll tell you why baby's crying,
Cause she's dying, aren't we all.
There was not much more for us to talk about,
Whatever we had once was gone.
So I turned my cab into the driveway,
Past the gate and the fine trimmed lawns.
And she said we must get together,
But I knew it'd never be arranged.
And she handed me twenty dollars,
For a two fifty fare, she said
"Harry, keep the change."
Well another man might have been angry,
And another man might have been hurt,
But another man never would have let her go...
I stashed the bill in my shirt.
And she walked away in silence,
It's strange, how you never know,
But we'd both gotten what we'd asked for,
Such a long, long time ago.
You see, she was gonna be an actress
And I was gonna learn to fly.
She took off to find the footlights,
And I took off for the sky.
And here, she's acting happy,
Inside her handsome home.
And me, I'm flying in my taxi,
Taking tips, and getting stoned,
I go flying so high, when I'm stoned.

In the end-by Linkin Park here are the lyrics
(It starts with)
One thing / I don’t know why
It doesn’t even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind / I designed this rhyme
To explain in due time
All I know
time is a valuable thing
Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings
Watch it count down to the end of the day
The clock ticks life away
It’s so unreal
Didn’t look out below
Watch the time go right out the window
Trying to hold on / but didn’t even know
Wasted it all just to
Watch you go
I kept everything inside and even though I tried / it all fell apart
What it meant to me / will eventually / be a memory / of a time when I tried
so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
One thing / I don’t know why
It doesn’t even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind / I designed this rhyme
To remind myself how
I tried so hard
In spite of the way you were mocking me
Acting like I was part of your property
Remembering all the times you fought with me
I’m surprised it got so (far)
Things aren’t the way they were before
You wouldn’t even recognize me anymore
Not that you knew me back then
But it all comes back to me
In the end
You kept everything inside and even though I tried / it all fell apart
What it meant to me / will eventually / be a memory / of a time when I
I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn’t even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn’t even matter
I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
And for all this
There’s only one thing you should know
I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
And for all this
There’s only one thing you should know
I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn’t even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn’t even matter

Not sure if you're into anything older, but there's this swingy, sitting on a piano in a red dress song by Judy Garland called "The Man That Got Away". It's so fab - she just belts it like a diva done wrong!

Let's go back a bit.
On the Jefferson Airplane's album "Surrealistic Pillow,"
on side 2, there is a song "Comin' Back To Me."
"Small things like reasons, are put in a jar-
Whatever happened to wishes, wished on a star...
The shadow on the breeze could have been anyone.."
over a dreamy, slow arpeggiated acoustic guitar riff.
I have reason to believe that Jerry Garcia (Greatful Dead) may have written this song.
It will stick in your head, but that's not a bad thing.
And it's part of a medley:
"Today" "Comin' Back To Me" "My Best Friend"
Which sets it off like a diamond in a platinum setting.
Obviously, I hope you get curious.
Email me, please.
