I sure wouldn't want to be treated in that way. I don't think I'd keep them on my list of friends! I don't think you should either. You deserve better treatment than that!

Well, the first thing that comes to mind is that these people are extremely rude and have absolutely NO social skills. Given that they went inside and never came back outside to invite you in or bid you farewell, I definitely think they are rude and have as much class as an elephant. As the hosts it is their responsibility to invite the guests into the home once it gets dark so that the evening can continue, or establish - by verbalizing their needs - that the evening has come to a close due to schedules, other plans, etc. Leaving you outside is a sign of disrespect to you,as their guests and friends.

And if it were done to me? Well, aside from being really pissed off, I can guarantee you dollars to donuts that I would not invite them to my house again. Ever. Nor would I invest my precious time and energy in cultivating a friendship with them.

However, to be fair I think you should discuss this with them before you give them the old "heave ho" and dump them from your social circle. It could all be a simple misunderstanding on everyone's part. You might want to ask them about it (calmly and rationally) and ask them if you offended them or explain that you weren't sure the visit was over. If you did offend them, you can make amends by apologizing to them (or taking the "high road", or rather a positive, humble approach) as a way to resolve the issue. But if you didn't offend them and they chose this as their way to curtail the evening, kiss them goodbye and make some better, and more socially skilled friends.

I would think that it was rather rude. If they wanted you to leave they could have at least said it was getting late and they better call it a night.
