Start localy, you need to be active in live theater on a community level, trying to preform and build skills. It also helps if you have a degree in theater. When preforming, make sure you are working with theaters that are part of the "ACTORS EQUIDY GUILD" program in order to gain points for membership. Once you are a full member of AEG, you are able to audition for Professional level shows. (The AEG is the actors Union for professional stage preformers). You then need an agent to get audtions, after some time, you will make it to the great white way.
The key is not to start at the top, work your way up and start small. Local theater is just as impressive and dignified as Broadway.
The same rules apply no matter what position you are after, Musican, Stage Crew, Production, Direction.
Maybe if you are close to boradway, while working small, you could get a job as an usher or lobby crew in order to be a small part of the theater scene while struggling to get that covited spot on stage.
