Pine. This house was built in the 1940s and all of the floors are pine.

the wood in most new stairs to day is out of oak

Oak, we're replacing them though cuz they're old and squeeky. And we're replacing the old hard wood with new hard wood, so i guess that includes the stairs. I believe it'll be maple.

cant see it.... its covered in some kind of plastic/cement. and the paint is chipping.

They are the outside stairs...

Ive seen beautiful stairs made out of very cheap wood.

Made 'em myself. Carpeted. I capped them with iron ballusters and oak railings.

i don't have any stairs, i have one step in the entry, it is made out of cement with tile covering it
