I just want to switch cords, but I wouldn't know what to do if I had to do anything else once the 2nd cord was plugged back in (hopefully this makes sense!)

Guys, seriously, I know it won't blow up or anything, I'm just saying if I have to call the cable company, do something with the IP address, or anything that requires effort I'm just going to say F it and not do it. I admit I don't know that much about computers but I'm not THAT dumb. hehe. Thanks to those w/ serious answers. And to the chick who called me stupid, you might want to learn how to spell stupid before calling someone else stupid. :)

You should not have any problems. If you do reboot, both your modem and pc and it will fix all. Good luck

I have unplugged my modem several times to move the computer from one room to another and I have never had a problem with anything messing up. Just be sure to turn your computer completely off before unplugging, that way there aren't any programs running that rely on modem communication that could be lost during the switch.

They are both the same cables, just one is longer, correct? If so, unplug your modem from the electrical outlet, THEN unscrew the cable from your wall and modem, then attach the new one, making sure everything is snug. Once this is done, plug your modem back into the electrical outlet in the wall and you'll be good to go. Good luck.

It doesnt hurt it at all I've had my computer on both short and long cords. Believe it or not but my computer runs faster on a long cord.

you shouldn't, but if something goes wrong, unplug the modem for 1 minute and plug it back in. If you have a wireless router, unplug that for a minute and plug it back in.

It shouldn't. If it is dial up, make sure that you are not connected to the internet through the modem, otherwise you will be disconnected.
