"riverdave" is correct. A burl will look like a defect in the tree. Many species of trees grow burls and some are very valuable. Because they are so valuable, they are usually sliced into veneer and used in fine furniture. Walnut burls are highly sought after and are a prized find.

Look for what appears to be a roundish mass of growth. They are sometimes found low on the tree at ground level. More often, they are found at the intersection of a branch higher in the tree. They are usually found on mature trees where the burl has had the time to grow to a recognizable size.

Check out some of the tree books at your local library and you will probably come across pictures of burls. They will also help you identify the trees on your property.

Good luck with your search.
