Sing the fifty states to the tune of "Turkey in the Straw."
There are 50 states in our country,
You can learn them all if you sing them with me.
We'll start with "A" and work our way through.
We are all very proud of the red, white and blue.
Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas
California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware
Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho
Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Don't you know!
Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine
Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota
Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska
Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico
New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio
Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, We're on a roll!
Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee
Texas, Utah, We're near the end, you see.
Vermont, Virginia, and Washington State
West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming. This is great!
We can sing them, we can say them, and now that we're all through.
We'll kiss our brains and say, "Yahoo!"

This was really hard for my daughter also. We bought a puzzle! And, it worked. Putting the puzzle together helped her get a fel for the locations and it was a fun way to learn. We focused on 5 States and capitols increasing by 5 each day over a 2 week period. TRY IT!

For the middle states, I made them into rows and then made them into sentences using the first letter of each state in order. Also, I used this program: http://quizhub.com/quiz/f-usa-map.cfm . I'm sure you know a lot of the states so use them to help you wtih the others and orient yourself. I have no advice with the capitals! Figure out what you know and concentrate on the ones you don't. Try to say the capital and the state together a lot. I hope I'm of some help!

Don't do it.
Why memorize something you can look up? Planning on getting a job where your performance requires you to have memorized this useless junk?
Why do we do this garbage work in schools???

what I do is I think of what the capitol sounds like,or,a riddle. for example. When I think of minnesota,I automatically think "soda".The capitol of minnesota is st. paul,so I say,St paul wants a soda.Or,to be easier, paul wants a soda.just come up with simple riddles.email me and I'll try to come up with more for ya!good luck!
