One thing is to break the states down into regions. There are seven they naturally break down into:
New England: ME, NH, VT, MA, RI. CT
Mid Atlantic: NY, NJ, PA, MD, DE, WV
South (Confederate): VA, NC, SC, GA, FL. Al, MS, LA, TX, AR, TN, KY
Midwest: OH, MI, IN, IL, WI, MN, IA
Plains: MO, ND, SD, NE, KS, OK
West: MT, WY, CO, NM, AZ, UT, NV, ID
Pacific: CA, OR, WA, AK, HA
If you think of the states regionally, it does help.

I'm Canadian, and I have my own trick -- why? because of that episode of Friends..
Anyways, Just list the states in alphabetical order. Then note how many start with A, B, C, etc. etc. Then learn the smaller lists seperately. Don't try to learn all the states at once. Just learn the A's and their capitols. Then when you've got them, go on to B's. When you got the B's, rhyme off the A's with the B's. And then go on to C. It takes time, but it works.

it's a pain in the butt but flashcards really work for learning the capitals, put the state name on one side of an index card and the capital name on the other side. To learn the location of the states get ahold of blank US maps and fill in what you know by memory then look at a map and go back in and fill in the ones you don't know the repitition will set them in your head. Tedious I know, but that's how learning works.

There isnt really a trick to it. I just kept studying the map and eventuallyi just memerized the shapes of all the states.
The capitals however is a-whole-nother story. Pure memorization.

my daughter who is in the 3rd grade had to learn all the states then the capitals
she had a song and it was in abc order, i dont know exactly how the song went but just know that after a then came c so on and so forth
as for the capitals, well she had a harder time with that one, no song...
so maybe that is the clue, come up with a song to help you remember lol
