I like giving my turtles names that reflect their home territory, other languages, etc.
Yellow bellies are 'Trachemys scripta scripta', 'trach' means roughness, 'emys' means turtle, and 'scripta' means writing.
You could base a name on that- Italics, or the name of a favorite lettering font; Emma (from emys), Trike (from trach), etc.
You could do a pun on 'yellow belly' as a coward- Noel Coward, etc.
Is there anything nearby that could be a good name- pond name, historic site, street name?
Other languages offer good names. Yellow, or example, is Amarillo in Spanish, Gelb in German, Gaillo in Italian, and Juane in French.
Turtle is also japuta, tortuga, etc.- see the link below for more

RE:
What's a good name for a pet turtle?
I found a turtle back in March. It was the size of a half dollar. My kids wanted to keep it so we brought it home. I researched the type, a yellow bellied slider, and made a home for it. It now eats out of my hand and has become part an extended part of the family. Only problem is we don't...

I agree with ShortDude, Yertle the Turtle from Dr. Seuss.
Or the Mock Turtle from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.

I just found a turtle the other day on my way home from school. So I took it home and called my mom to see if I could keep it. She said I could so I thought of a name for him. I thought of the show Big Bang Theory and named him Sheldon.

I keep many turtles and I like to name if after their personalities or what they look like.
Pancake for my softshell.
Cool Guy b/c he lets me pet him.
Mei Mei (means lil' sister in Chinese) for my one of my Chinese turts
Don't name it Yertle (Dr. Seuss story), or Squirt and Crush (Finding Nemo). I know tonnes of people who have named it those.
Get your kids to name it... use words to describe him. Maybe some of those words sound good. Or even Bob is a good name.
The latin name for YBS is Trachemys scripta scripta. Good luck.
