The ball is held in the ring by sheer pressure. The ring is rigid and the ball has two small indents where the ring fits into. There is a tool to do it, you can get them usually where you got the piercing. And they show you how to use them.
I used the needle-nose pliers, jewelry ones which are very small, inside the ring and gently open the ring. It did work, but my hubby had to hold the ring so as not to pull.
Good luck!!

First I will tell you that it is waaay to early to change it. You can get a keloid on your belly button if you change it too early which is a huge growth that has to be surgically removed.
Now how you change it is to take the two circles around the ball and to pull them apart/away from the ball and the ball will pop right out...It's not screwed on like you think.

I know exactly how that is. What I did is I got some needle nose pliers and stuck them in the center of the bellyring and I opened them and they spread the bars apart and the ball came out. It should work. I hope I made sense.

I know this one. Cause I had to assist my daughter in getting hers out. Two pairs of pliers. Firm Grip..
You must be careful to turn the right way from the start but you should be able to get them to twist without too much effort.
Happy undoin.

I had this same problem. You probably think you can just twist it off, right? Wrong-- you need to use a like a wrench or something. Call a piercing place or just go to one- they'll help you.

for all those people who said to get pliers,NO!! that will tear the ring off and you will, bleed [trust me, past experiance]what you need to do is get a pair of ringlets that makes it more easy to do it without getting it ripped off, just remember when you do this keep it under hot water!! if it is a fake jewl than it will start to turn black when you use the ringlets that will make it not hurt a bit!! goood luck

Try a little warm water first... then hold it with a handkerchief and twist it apart.
