Dear Mom,
We have been together my entire life. You have been a good woman and treated me as good as any mom could. I want you to realize that I appreciate what we have had and I will always be grateful to you. There is no easy way to say it. There is way to control or ease the emotions that are about to be released. I have to go find myself. I am no longer sure of where I stop and you begin. I need space to define who I am as a person. I need time to allow for growth. I wish there was an easy way to do this, but, Mom, you know there isn't. This is not good. This is not bad. It just is what it is. Don't make this any more than that. It will only lead to more hurting. This is about me. THIS IS ABOUT ME. I would love to remain friends and I think we can. So, sorry for this inconvienence. I know we had planned on going to Sea World and a cruise this year. I also know that I told you I would mow the lawn. I would like to do this, but I feel it would be somewhat awkward to say the least. How about I drop by while you are at work and I will take out the trash for you one last time. As for the dog, I would really appreciate if you could keep him until I get on my feet. I should be back from Jamaica by next fall. I borrowed a few bucks from your bank account. I promise I'll pay you back just as soon as I figure out what I'm going to do with my life and I become a millionare. I think that I could be the next Americal Idol. Did I tell you that I can sing. I was singing along with that McDonalds commercial and that is when it hit me. Thanks for everything. Thanks for the love, thanks for the money, and thanks for loaning me your car. I will get it back to you just as soon as I can get some money together to have it shipped. It will probably be a while. I think it is a couple thousand dollars, and I only took $10,000 from your account. I knew you would understand. Anyway, keep watching American Idol for me.

What do you mean "break up"? I'm not understanding your question. If you mean to emancipate yourself from her from a legal standpoint, then I know what you mean. If that is the case, sit her down when the timing is right...meaning when the atmosphere is free of tension, surrounding is quiet, and it is only the two of you. Do it tactfully as you can without being brutally honest. No matter what, she will get hurt but hopefully with time, the both of you can heal the relationship...preferrably from a distance in the meantime.

Wow. Must be pretty bad situation if you're considering breaking all communication with Mom.
If things are really that bad, just come right out and say it. But I urge you to reconsider; it's not something to do lightly. And once it's done, there may never be going back.

break it to her gently. i'm sure you're mom will understand that it's time for you to move on and experience life in the real world. you're not a kid anymore. anyway, i believe she's a great mom and have taught you a lot of things that will be your guide when you get on to the real world. just assure her that she will always be your mom and you will always be her kid but for now she should loosen her grip on you and let you explore things on your own.

Someday your going to look back and say "What the hell was I thinking?" You wouldn't even be alive if it weren't for her. If your having problems then just realize your only having problems for now. Not forever. Don't break her heart, you probably will need her if someone breaks yours.

OH, your Mom is old enough to understand that you were not going to be hers for life...just a fling. She will take it just fine...in fact, she has another on the line as I type.

Just be honest with her and let her know, you will always be her baby, but it is time for your little wings to fly on their own. She will be a little heart broken at first but will soon get over it and move on.
Just don't come crying back !
